About the Toyota Highlander

Toyota introduced the Highlander in 2000 (for the 2001 model year) as a car-based crossover SUV designed primarily for the North American market. Built on a modified Camry platform, it offered families a more fuel-efficient and car-like alternative to traditional body-on-frame SUVs while providing available all-wheel drive and, later, three rows of seating.

The original Highlander competed against early crossovers and midsize SUVs like the Honda Pilot (introduced shortly after), Ford Explorer, and Nissan Pathfinder, carving out a strong position in the emerging midsize crossover segment. Its unibody construction delivered smoother ride quality and better handling than truck-based competitors while maintaining generous cargo space and practicality.

The second generation launched for the 2008 model year with larger dimensions, more refined styling, and increased interior space. Toyota introduced a hybrid powertrain option early in this generation, making the Highlander one of the first three-row hybrid SUVs on the market.

The third generation debuted for the 2014 model year, featuring bolder styling, a higher-quality interior, and improved technology. Toyota refined the driving experience while maintaining the durability and low ownership costs that made the Highlander a family favorite.

The current fourth generation arrived for the 2020 model year, riding on Toyota’s TNGA-K platform shared with the Camry, Avalon, and RAV4. It introduced a more upscale interior with available 12.3-inch touchscreen displays, Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 standard across all trims, and an available hybrid powertrain capable of achieving up to 36 mpg combined (among the best in its class).

For 2023, Toyota added the option of a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, replacing the long-running V6 for improved efficiency and lower emissions.

As of 2025, the Highlander competes against the Honda Pilot, Mazda CX-90 (which replaced the CX-9), Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, and Volkswagen Atlas. Above it in Toyota’s lineup sits the larger Grand Highlander, introduced for 2024 to offer more passenger and cargo space.

The Highlander remains one of America’s best-selling three-row SUVs, valued for its proven reliability, strong resale value, and ability to serve families dependably for hundreds of thousands of miles.
