About the Nissan Pathfinder

Nissan introduced the Pathfinder in 1986 as a rugged, body-on-frame SUV derived from the Nissan Hardbody pickup truck. This first generation appealed to buyers seeking something more refined than a Ford Bronco II or Chevrolet S-10 Blazer but still genuinely off-road capable. Initially offered as a two-door model, the Pathfinder gained a four-door version in 1990, significantly expanding its family appeal.

The second generation (1996-2004) grew in size and refinement but switched to a unibody construction rather than retaining a truck-based frame. Competing against the Ford Explorer, Toyota 4Runner, and Jeep Grand Cherokee, this generation struck a balance between comfort and capability, helping the Pathfinder become a common sight in suburban driveways.

The third generation (2005-2012) returned to a body-on-frame design using Nissan’s F-Alpha platform, shared with the Frontier and Xterra. It offered a 4.0-liter V6 and an optional 5.6-liter V8, giving it serious towing and off-road credentials. However, as crossover-style SUVs like the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander gained popularity, the Pathfinder’s rugged approach appealed to a narrower audience.

The fourth generation (2013-2020) marked a major shift, as Nissan once again adopted a unibody platform, this time shared with the Altima and Murano. The move prioritized ride comfort, fuel efficiency, and interior space over off-road toughness. While traditionalists lamented the loss of trail ability, the family-friendly design broadened the Pathfinder’s appeal among buyers.

The fifth generation debuted for the 2022 model year and represented a complete redesign. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) was replaced by a conventional nine-speed automatic, greatly improving drivability. The new design adopted a more upright, squared-off stance reminiscent of earlier Pathfinders, while the interior saw major improvements in materials, technology, and space.

Today’s Pathfinder is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 producing 284 horsepower and 259 lb-ft of torque, paired with either front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive. It competes directly with the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Hyundai Palisade, and Kia Telluride in the three-row midsize SUV segment.

The latest Pathfinder successfully blends family-friendly comfort with enough capability and style to honor its adventurous heritage.
