About the Mazda CX-9

Mazda introduced the CX-9 for the 2007 model year as its first three-row crossover SUV, targeting families who wanted more space without sacrificing driving dynamics. Built on Ford’s CD3 platform and initially equipped with a Ford-sourced 3.5-liter V6, the first-generation CX-9 quickly established itself as a driver-focused alternative in the segment.

Mazda replaced that engine with its own 3.7-liter V6 producing 273 horsepower in 2008, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. A 2010 facelift brought refreshed styling and updated technology features. Throughout this generation, buyers often cross-shopped the CX-9 with the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, and Ford Explorer.

The second generation arrived for the 2016 model year, representing a complete transformation. Moving to Mazda’s lightweight Skyactiv platform, the redesigned CX-9 adopted the brand’s Kodo design language and introduced a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine.

This powertrain produced 227 horsepower on regular fuel or 250 horsepower on premium, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and available all-wheel drive (front-wheel drive remained standard on lower trims).

The new CX-9 earned widespread praise for its upscale interior materials, engaging driving dynamics, and refined road manners, earning Car and Driver 10Best Trucks and SUVs honors for 2017 and 2018. Competitors included the Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade, Kia Telluride, and Chevrolet Traverse.

The CX-9 received its final update for 2023, when Mazda dropped the base Sport trim and added more standard equipment. Production ended after this model year as Mazda shifted focus to the larger and more premium CX-90, which rides on a new rear-wheel-drive-based platform and offers inline-six and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

The CX-9 remains available in some international markets, but in North America, the CX-90 now serves as Mazda’s sole three-row SUV offering.
