About the Ford Focus

The Ford Focus arrived in Europe in 1998 and in North America for the 2000 model year as a compact car manufactured by Ford Motor Company until 2025. It replaced the long running Escort in Ford’s model lineup for the 2000 model year in the US, offering practical, affordable transportation with a dash of athleticism and European style.

The first generation Focus won the European Car of the Year award in 1999 and the North American Car of the Year award for 2000. Buyers choosing compact cars at the time also considered competitors like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, and Volkswagen Golf.

The second generation launched at the Paris Motor Show in September 2004, though North American shoppers received a substantially different version starting for the 2008 model year.

The U.S. market Focus continued to use the older C170 platform rather than the newer global C1 architecture and eventually dropped the hatchback and wagon in favor of coupe and sedan body styles. This divergence from the global model frustrated enthusiasts who wanted the more advanced European design that was sold overseas.

For 2012, the North American Focus moved to Ford’s global C platform, finally unifying it with the version sold in Europe and other markets. This generation became the world’s best selling nameplate in 2012 based on global registration data and introduced Ford’s 1.0 liter EcoBoost three cylinder petrol engine to the Focus lineup in several markets, an engine that went on to win multiple International Engine of the Year awards.

Performance oriented ST and RS versions were also offered, with the RS featuring standard all wheel drive. The third generation Focus competed against refreshed versions of the Civic, Corolla, Mazda3, and Golf in an increasingly competitive segment.

The fourth generation Focus began production in 2018 in Germany and China, but American buyers lost access to the model after the 2018 model year as Ford exited the U.S. compact car segment.

While North American production ended in 2018, Ford continued producing the Focus for global markets until November 2025, when the final units rolled off the assembly line at the Saarlouis plant in Germany, marking the end of the model’s 27 year run.

Ford’s strategic shift away from traditional passenger cars reflected what executives were seeing in showrooms, with customers consistently choosing crossovers and other vehicles with higher seating positions and greater versatility.
