About the Mazda 3

The Mazda 3 made its debut in 2003 as Mazda’s entry into the competitive compact car segment. This model replaced the aging Mazda 323 and Protégé lines, marking a significant shift in the company’s design philosophy and engineering approach. Built on Mazda’s new C1 platform, the original Mazda 3 was offered in both sedan and hatchback configurations.

Development began in the late 1990s with a focus on sporty handling characteristics that would differentiate it from other compact cars. The first generation ran from 2003 to 2009, establishing the model’s reputation for driving dynamics. Buyers considering the Mazda 3 during this period often cross-shopped it against the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Nissan Sentra, and Volkswagen Jetta.

A complete redesign arrived for the 2010 model year, introducing Mazda’s KODO design language and SkyActiv technology. This second generation emphasized fuel efficiency while maintaining the brand’s zoom-zoom driving philosophy. The platform received updates that improved interior space and ride quality.

The third generation launched in 2014, further refining the SkyActiv approach with improved engines and transmissions. Mazda introduced more premium materials and advanced safety features during this era. The current fourth generation debuted in 2019, featuring an even more upscale interior and sophisticated exterior styling.

Throughout its production run, the Mazda 3 has garnered numerous awards and accolades. Motor Trend named it Car of the Year in 2004. The model appeared on Car and Driver’s 10Best list multiple times between 2004 and 2008.

Consumer Reports has consistently rated various generations for their reliability and owner satisfaction. The Mazda 3 has sold over six million units worldwide, establishing itself as one of the most successful models in Mazda’s lineup.
