About the Nissan Armada
Nissan introduced the first-generation Armada for the 2005 model year, building it on the same body-on-frame platform as the full-size Titan pickup. The large SUV was aimed squarely at competitors such as the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and Toyota Sequoia.
Early models were powered by a 5.6-liter V8 producing 305 horsepower and offered seating for up to eight passengers. The first generation remained in production through the 2015 model year and received a notable refresh for 2008 that revised exterior styling and improved interior materials and features.
A fully redesigned second generation was unveiled at the 2016 Chicago Auto Show. This time, Nissan moved away from the Titan-based architecture and instead adapted the global Nissan Patrol Y62 platform, a long-running and highly regarded off-road SUV sold internationally but never offered in the U.S. market.
The Armada shared its underlying structure and many mechanical components with the Infiniti QX80. Power came from a 5.6-liter V8 paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission, producing 390 horsepower at launch and later increased to 400 horsepower following a mid-cycle update.
The second-generation Armada earned a reputation for blending capability, comfort, and relative value. It offered strong standard equipment levels and a maximum towing capacity of up to 8,500 pounds, putting it on par with key rivals. A refresh for the 2021 model year updated the exterior design, added a larger infotainment display, and brought additional driver-assistance technology, helping extend the model’s competitiveness.
The third generation arrived for the 2025 model year, debuting in fall 2024 with major mechanical and technological changes. Nissan replaced the long-running V8 with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 producing 425 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, exceeding the output of the previous engine while improving efficiency.
The redesign also expanded the trim lineup, including the off-road-oriented PRO-4X with a locking rear differential and available adaptive air suspension, alongside the range-topping Platinum Reserve luxury trim.
Today’s Armada continues to compete against the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition, Toyota Sequoia, and Jeep Wagoneer. It retains body-on-frame construction and three-row seating for up to eight passengers, combining family-hauling practicality with off-road capability rooted in its Patrol-based heritage.
