About the Ford Freestyle

When the Freestyle crossover splashed onto the scene in 2004 (as a 2005 model), Ford was making waves in the auto industry by blending the best attributes of SUVs and sedans into one revolutionary package. Built atop the same platform as the sensible Five Hundred sedan, the Freestyle took practicality to new heights.

Flexibility was the name of the game, with a spacious cabin playing host to up to seven adventurous passengers. Yet the Freestyle granted drivers SUV-rivaling ground clearance and available all-wheel drive to stray from the beaten path, all while delivering car-like maneuverability thanks to its smooth continuously variable transmission.

Under the hood, a brawny 3-liter V6 dished out 203 galloping horses, letting families hustle down the highway with authority. The Freestyle’s versatile interior transformations were equally impressive – with all rear seats folded flat, the cabin transformed into a cavernous cargo hold rivaling traditional SUVs.

Yet the Freestyle refused to compromise on safety, surrounding occupants with a fortress of airbags and crash-absorbing architecture. Early reviews sung praises, but the crossover concept was simply too pioneering, and in 2007 Ford sent the Freestyle riding into the sunset after just three years. Yet its legacy lives on as an inspiration for a new generation of genre-bending vehicles.

At the time of the Ford Freestyle’s production, the crossover segment was growing and becoming increasingly competitive. Potential buyers of the Freestyle might have also considered vehicles such as the Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, and Chevrolet Traverse.
