About the Volkswagen Passat

The Volkswagen Passat is a mid-size sedan that has been a staple in Volkswagen’s lineup for many years. It was first introduced in 1973 and has since evolved through numerous generations, with the US market typically receiving a version tailored to its consumers’ preferences.

Over time, the Passat became known for its solid build quality, spacious interior, and comfortable ride, finding a niche among buyers who valued a European driving experience in a family sedan format.

In the United States, the Passat has been through multiple iterations. The version specifically designed for the American market was introduced for the 2012 model year, larger and more affordable than its European counterpart, aiming to better compete with other mid-size sedans in the US.

This US-specific Passat was produced at Volkswagen’s Chattanooga, Tennessee plant and offered a range of engines over its lifespan, including a fuel-efficient TDI diesel option that was later discontinued following the diesel emissions scandal.

The US Passat saw a significant refresh for the 2016 model year, with updated exterior styling, new safety features, and improved infotainment systems.

However, the most substantial update came with the 2020 model year, which brought a more extensive redesign. The 2020 Passat featured a bolder exterior, a more modern interior with higher-quality materials, and additional standard equipment, including advanced driver assistance technologies.

Despite its updates and longstanding presence, Volkswagen announced that the Passat would be discontinued in the US after the 2022 model year. This decision was influenced by a market shift toward SUVs and crossovers, with declining sedan sales making it challenging to justify the continuation of the model in the region.

Throughout its history, the Volkswagen Passat competed with a variety of mid-size sedans. Key competitors included the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Ford Fusion, and Hyundai Sonata, each offering their own mix of reliability, features, and driving dynamics that appealed to buyers in the segment.
