About the Lexus IS 300

Lexus created the IS line to compete directly against European sport sedans, launching the model in Japan as the Toyota Altezza in 1998 before bringing it to North America as the IS 300 in 2001. Developed under legendary engineer Nobuaki Katayama (father of the AE86 Corolla and chief engineer of the Mk IV Supra), the first-generation IS featured rear-wheel drive, near-perfect weight distribution, and a smooth 215-horsepower 2JZ inline-six engine.

A distinctive SportCross wagon variant arrived for 2002. While praised for handling dynamics and unique “chronograph” instrument cluster styling, the IS competed against formidable rivals including the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Audi A4 during this era.

The second generation debuted in 2006 with V6 engines replacing the beloved inline-six, riding on a shortened GS platform. Available as IS 250 and IS 350 models with optional all-wheel drive, this generation expanded the lineup significantly.

The high-performance IS F arrived in 2008 with a 5.0-liter V8 producing 416 horsepower, directly challenging the BMW M3. An IS C convertible with a power-retractable hardtop joined the range from 2010 to 2015. Through multiple updates over eight years, this generation competed against the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C-Class, Audi A4, and Infiniti G37.

Lexus introduced the third-generation IS in 2013, and despite being over a decade old, it remains in production for 2025 with regular updates. A major 2021 refresh brought aggressive new styling with Lexus’ signature spindle grille, updated suspension tuning, and a modernized interior with touchscreen infotainment supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The IS 300 nameplate returned in 2016, initially as an all-wheel-drive model with a detuned V6, later also designating rear-drive models with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 241 horsepower. Current competitors include the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Genesis G70, Infiniti Q50, Alfa Romeo Giulia, and Cadillac CT4. Reports indicate production will end in late 2025.
