About the Audi A4

The Audi A4 debuted in 1994 as the German automaker’s entry into the compact executive sedan segment, replacing the long-running Audi 80. It reached the United States for the 1996 model year, marking Audi’s renewed push into the premium compact market.

This move positioned Audi directly against established rivals like the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The original B5 generation introduced Audi’s modern design language and helped popularize the quattro all-wheel drive system in the premium compact segment.

Through six major generations, the A4 has evolved significantly. The B6 generation (2000–2006) brought more refined styling and improved interior quality. The B7 (2004–2008) featured subtle exterior updates and enhanced technology. The B8 generation (2008–2016) represented a major leap forward with lighter construction, more efficient engines, and improved chassis dynamics.

The B9 generation (2016–2023) introduced Audi’s Virtual Cockpit digital instrument cluster and MLB Evo platform.
