About the Chevrolet Equinox
Chevrolet introduced the Equinox for the 2005 model year as the brand’s first entry into the rapidly expanding crossover segment. Positioned to replace the truck-based Tracker and S-10 Blazer, the original Equinox competed against the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Hyundai Santa Fe.
Built on GM’s Theta platform at the CAMI plant in Ontario, the first generation featured a 3.4L V6 with a signature sliding rear bench seat called “Multi-Flex.”
A second generation debuted in 2010 with updated styling and more efficient powertrains. For the first time, a four-cylinder became standard, with an optional V6 still available for those wanting extra power. This generation saw consistent improvements throughout its run, including the addition of Chevrolet MyLink infotainment in 2012 and enhanced safety features.
Production expanded to multiple facilities including Spring Hill, Tennessee. The 2017 final year brought special Midnight Edition and Sport appearance packages before the next redesign.
The third generation launched for 2018 represented a significant shift. Chevy downsized the Equinox to compact crossover dimensions while expanding engine choices to three turbocharged four-cylinders: a 1.5L base engine, a more powerful 2.0L turbo, and a 1.6L turbo-diesel option.
A comprehensive 2022 refresh updated the grille, headlamps, and fascia while adding the sporty RS trim. This generation competed against the Mazda CX-5, Nissan Rogue, and Ford Escape with its sleeker proportions and improved interior materials.
The fourth generation arrived for 2025 with bold truck-inspired design language matching other recent Chevrolet SUVs like the Traverse and Blazer. The new Equinox features a signature two-tier “highbrow” headlight treatment, wider stance (2.5 inches broader than before), and three distinct trim personalities: LT, RS, and the new outdoorsy Activ. Inside, dual 11-inch screens dominate the dashboard with Google built-in services.
A refined 1.5L turbo four-cylinder produces 175 horsepower with a CVT for front-drive models or an eight-speed automatic for all-wheel-drive variants. Production takes place at GM’s San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico.
