About the Jeep Grand Wagoneer

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer carries a nameplate steeped in automotive history, with roots stretching back to 1963 when the original Wagoneer helped define what would later be known as the sport utility vehicle segment. That first-generation model remained in production through 1991 with relatively minor changes to its body-on-frame design.

The SJ-body Wagoneer became an American icon, offering families a go-anywhere vehicle with a level of comfort and refinement that was notable for its era. A brief Grand Wagoneer revival appeared for 1993 only on the ZJ platform, featuring a 5.2-liter Magnum V8, standard four-wheel drive, and a premium leather-trimmed interior. Production was limited to 6,378 units before the nameplate was again discontinued.

After nearly three decades away from showrooms, Jeep revived the Grand Wagoneer for the 2022 model year as a full-size luxury SUV aimed squarely at competitors such as the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, and Lincoln Navigator.

Built at the Warren Truck Assembly Plant in Michigan, the modern Grand Wagoneer shares no mechanical components with its classic predecessor beyond the storied name and three-row layout. The new model targeted buyers seeking American luxury paired with genuine capability, offering features such as the Quadra-Drive II four-wheel-drive system and an available air suspension that provides both ride comfort and off-road adaptability.

The Grand Wagoneer continues to evolve as Jeep’s flagship SUV. Current models are powered by the Hurricane twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine producing 540 horsepower and 521 lb-ft of torque, an increase over earlier versions of the Hurricane engine used at launch.

This powertrain enables a maximum towing capacity of up to 9,800 pounds while also improving efficiency compared to the V8 engines previously offered in the segment. Inside, the cabin features up to 75 inches of total screen surface across multiple displays, along with available luxury options such as the McIntosh 1,375-watt audio system with 23 speakers.

Jeep continues to produce both the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer as distinct models in its lineup. While electrification is expanding across the brand, Jeep has not yet officially confirmed a Grand Wagoneer 4xe or hybrid variant for production, though the company has indicated interest in future electrified options that would preserve the vehicle’s towing and long-distance capabilities.
