About the Cadillac Escalade
The Cadillac Escalade debuted for the 1999 model year as General Motors’ response to the rising popularity of the Lincoln Navigator. Built on the GMT400 platform (shared with the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon Denali), the first-generation Escalade marked Cadillac’s entry into the full-size luxury SUV market at a time when premium brands were moving quickly to meet America’s growing appetite for upscale utility vehicles.
Early competitors included the Lincoln Navigator and Lexus LX 470, both of which had already established themselves in the luxury SUV segment. The original Escalade’s rushed development was evident, as it was essentially a rebadged GMC Yukon Denali with Cadillac styling cues and upgraded interior trim.
The second generation arrived for the 2002 model year, now based on the GMT800 platform. It featured more distinctive Cadillac design language, a higher-quality interior, and greater differentiation from its corporate siblings. This generation also introduced the Escalade EXT pickup variant and the ESV extended-length model.
Subsequent generations continued to refine the Escalade’s formula. The third generation (2007-2014) emphasized sharp-edged styling and improved technology, while the fourth generation (2015-2020) brought significant advances in refinement, safety, and in-car tech.
The current fifth generation, launched for the 2021 model year, represents the most advanced Escalade yet. It offers a 38-inch curved OLED display, available Super Cruise hands-free driving technology, and an optional Air Ride Adaptive Suspension system.
Today, the Escalade competes directly with the Lincoln Navigator, BMW X7, Mercedes-Benz GLS, and Infiniti QX80.
