Note: Recommend OEM (Genuine Volvo) blades due to unique Volvo fitment. Alternatively, the Bosch Aerotwin line of blades will also work but OEM blades simply perform better in this case.

About the Volvo XC90

Volvo unveiled the XC90 at the 2002 North American International Auto Show, marking the Swedish automaker’s first SUV. Built on the P2 platform shared with the S80 sedan, the first-generation XC90 entered production in August 2002 at Volvo’s Torslanda plant in Sweden.

Early buyers could choose between a 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine or a more powerful turbocharged inline-six, both offered with front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive. The XC90 quickly stood out for its clean Scandinavian design and strong emphasis on safety, earning Motor Trend’s SUV of the Year award shortly after its debut.

Production of the first generation continued through 2014, with manufacturing later shifting to China for select markets where it was sold as the XC90 Classic.

The second-generation XC90 launched in late 2014 on Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture platform, ushering in a new design era for the brand. It introduced signature “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlights, a minimalist interior centered around a large vertical touchscreen, and a renewed focus on electrification.

Volvo eliminated six-cylinder engines entirely, instead offering turbocharged and turbocharged-plus-supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder powertrains. The range-topping T8 plug-in hybrid combined gasoline and electric power for a total output that initially reached 400 horsepower and later increased to 455 horsepower, along with an EPA-rated electric driving range that grew over time to the low-30-mile range.

The XC90 competed in the premium three-row SUV segment against vehicles such as the BMW X5, Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Acura MDX, and Lexus RX, and again earned Motor Trend’s SUV of the Year honors for this generation.

A significant mid-cycle refresh arrived for the 2025 model year, bringing revised exterior styling, a more refined cabin, and updated technology. Changes included a new 11.2-inch vertical touchscreen running Volvo’s latest infotainment software, improved sound insulation, and suspension refinements aimed at enhancing ride comfort.

The current powertrain lineup consists of mild-hybrid B5 and B6 variants producing 247 and 295 horsepower respectively, along with the T8 plug-in hybrid. Although Volvo has introduced the all-electric EX90 as its next-generation flagship SUV, continued demand has led the company to keep the XC90 in production alongside it.

The XC90 remains one of Volvo’s most important models globally and continues to be a strong seller in the United States.
