About the Volkswagen Touareg

The Volkswagen Touareg debuted for the 2004 model year as VW’s bold entry into the luxury SUV market. Named after the nomadic Tuareg people of the Sahara Desert, this premium vehicle demonstrated Volkswagen’s ability to blend comfort with authentic off-road capability.

The first-generation Touareg shared its platform with the Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7, featuring advanced technology like adjustable air suspension and sophisticated all-wheel-drive systems. VW engineered the SUV to handle everything from mall parking lots to mountain trails with equal composure.

Primary competitors during its run included the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz M-Class (later GLE), and Lexus RX. The Touareg distinguished itself with an impressive combination of luxury amenities and legitimate off-road performance that many rivals couldn’t match.

The second generation arrived in 2010, placing greater emphasis on on-road refinement while maintaining its off-road DNA. Volkswagen discontinued the Touareg in North America after 2017, shifting focus to the more mainstream Atlas.

During its production run, the Touareg established itself as one of the most capable luxury SUVs available, offering exceptional build quality and a driving experience that exceeded expectations. The model showcased VW’s technical excellence through innovations like the V10 TDI engine option and advanced terrain management systems.
