About the Volkswagen Tiguan

Volkswagen launched the Tiguan in 2007 as its entry into the growing compact SUV segment. The name, a blend of “Tiger” and “Leguan” (German for iguana), was chosen through a reader poll conducted by German automotive magazine Auto Bild.

The first-generation Tiguan was based on Volkswagen’s PQ35 platform (shared with the Golf of that era) and was initially produced in Wolfsburg, Germany. It earned a reputation for upscale interior materials, composed road manners, and a distinctly European driving feel that set it apart from rivals such as the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and later the Mazda CX-5.

A facelift for the 2012 model year updated the exterior design while preserving the qualities that appealed to buyers seeking refinement over outright utility.

The second generation debuted globally in 2016 and reached the U.S. market for the 2018 model year. This version moved to Volkswagen’s MQB platform, grew noticeably in size, and introduced more modern technology and safety features.

For North America, Volkswagen added an available third-row seat, making the Tiguan one of the few compact SUVs to offer seating for up to seven passengers. Production for the U.S. market shifted primarily to Volkswagen’s Puebla, Mexico facility.

A refresh for the 2022 model year brought updated exterior styling, revised interior controls, and improved infotainment features. Throughout its run, which lasted through the 2024 model year, the Tiguan competed in a crowded segment that included the Audi Q3, Subaru Forester, Nissan Rogue, Ford Escape, and Honda CR-V, while maintaining a reputation for tidy handling and a more premium cabin than many rivals.

For the 2025 model year, Volkswagen introduced a fully redesigned third-generation Tiguan for the U.S. market. This new version dropped the optional third-row seat in favor of improved five-passenger comfort and increased cargo space. Built on the latest evolution of the MQB architecture, the redesigned Tiguan is lighter by roughly 170 pounds thanks to greater use of high-strength steel and aluminum components.

Power comes from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 201 horsepower. The interior takes a significant step up in design and materials, with a standard 12.9-inch touchscreen, an available 15-inch display, and upscale options such as genuine wood trim and perforated leather upholstery.

Looking ahead, the 2026 model year adds a new SEL R-Line Turbo trim, featuring a more powerful 268-horsepower version of the turbocharged four-cylinder engine. With more than 7.6 million units produced globally since its introduction, the Tiguan has become Volkswagen’s best-selling vehicle worldwide and remains one of the brand’s most important models in the U.S. lineup.
