About the Toyota Prius
The Toyota Prius revolutionized personal transportation when it launched in Japan in 1997, arriving in the United States in 2000 as the world’s first mass-produced hybrid vehicle. This groundbreaking sedan introduced mainstream consumers to electric-assist technology, forever changing conversations about fuel economy and environmental impact.
Early adopters faced limited competition, though Honda’s original Insight appeared around the same time as a smaller and more minimalist alternative.

The third generation arrived for the 2010 model year with refined styling, improved efficiency, and new technology.
It competed against models like the Honda Insight, Honda CR-Z, and later the Chevrolet Volt, though the Volt’s plug-in hybrid system placed it in a slightly different category.
Toyota introduced the fourth generation for the 2016 model year, featuring bold, angular styling and an even lower drag coefficient.
