About the Subaru Forester

The Subaru Forester launched in 1997 as a pioneering crossover that blended wagon practicality with SUV capability. Built on the Impreza platform, this compact SUV introduced American buyers to Subaru’s signature symmetrical all-wheel-drive system in a more affordable package than traditional SUVs.

The first generation (1997-2002) competed against early crossovers like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V, though few vehicles matched its standard all-wheel-drive advantage. The second generation (2003-2008) grew in size and refinement while maintaining its rugged character.

Third-generation models (2009-2013) featured more conventional SUV styling and improved interior space, competing directly with the refreshed CR-V and Mazda’s then-new CX-5.

Fourth-generation Foresters (2014-2018) adopted a more mainstream approach with increased passenger room, cargo capacity, and available advanced safety technology. The fifth generation (2019-2024), built on the Subaru Global Platform, offered better safety features, better ride quality, and improved efficiency.

The completely redesigned 2025 Forester represents the most significant update in the model’s history. This sixth-generation model features bold new exterior styling, a more spacious interior, and advanced technology including a larger touchscreen and the latest version of Subaru’s EyeSight safety suite.

The 2025 redesign also addresses previous criticisms about interior materials and infotainment responsiveness.

Standard all-wheel-drive remains the Forester’s calling card in a segment where competitors like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Nissan Rogue often offer it only on higher trims. The current Forester also competes with the Mazda CX-5 and CX-50 for buyers prioritizing driving dynamics.
