About the Subaru Crosstrek

The Subaru Crosstrek emerged in 2012 as the XV Crosstrek, representing Subaru’s entry into the rapidly expanding compact crossover segment. Built on the proven Impreza platform, this lifted hatchback offered something different from traditional SUVs. The Crosstrek provided car-like fuel economy with light off-road capability that appealed to active lifestyle buyers.

Subaru positioned the Crosstrek as an affordable alternative to larger, thirstier SUVs. The original generation featured standard all-wheel drive, generous ground clearance, and rugged body cladding that suggested outdoor competence. Sales grew steadily as buyers appreciated the practical blend of efficiency and versatility.

The second generation launched for the 2018 model year brought significant improvements. Subaru redesigned the interior with better materials and updated technology. The platform became more rigid while maintaining the 8.7 inches of ground clearance that made the first generation popular. A more powerful 2.5-liter engine option joined the lineup in 2021, addressing earlier criticisms about sluggish acceleration.

The third generation debuted for the 2024 model year with evolutionary styling and a more refined cabin. Subaru simplified the name to just “Crosstrek” in all markets, dropping the “XV” badge used previously in some regions. The new model rides on an updated version of Subaru’s Global Platform, improving ride comfort and noise isolation.

Inside, it features a larger vertical touchscreen, upgraded driver-assistance technology, and improved safety structures. Engine choices remain familiar, with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder standard and the 2.5-liter available on higher trims, while hybrid options continue in select markets. Subaru also emphasized greater structural rigidity and enhanced off-road capability through features like X-Mode and dual-function terrain settings on higher trims.

Today’s Crosstrek competes primarily with the Honda HR-V, Nissan Rogue Sport, Mazda CX-30, and Toyota Corolla Cross. These rivals offer similar compact dimensions and crossover styling. The Nissan Kicks and Toyota C-HR represent other alternatives, though both lack standard all-wheel drive.
