About the Subaru Ascent

The Subaru Ascent debuted for the 2019 model year as the brand’s first purpose-built three-row SUV, filling the gap left by the discontinued Tribeca and giving Subaru families the interior space they had been requesting for years.

Built on Subaru’s Global Platform at the Lafayette, Indiana assembly plant, the Ascent measures just under 197 inches long and offers seating for seven or eight passengers depending on configuration. Standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and 8.7 inches of ground clearance reinforce Subaru’s go-anywhere reputation, while family-friendly touches like up to 19 cupholders highlight the Ascent’s people-hauling focus.

Power comes from a 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer four-cylinder engine producing 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, paired with Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT. The Ascent is rated at 21 mpg combined and offers up to 5,000 pounds of towing capacity when properly equipped, making it capable of pulling small campers or boat trailers.

EyeSight driver assistance technology is standard across all trims and includes adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. Shoppers typically compare the Ascent with the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Mazda CX-90, and Hyundai Palisade, all of which compete in the crowded three-row SUV segment focused on family versatility.

Subaru refreshed the Ascent with updated styling that included revised headlights and C-shaped taillights, along with a new available 11.6-inch vertical touchscreen featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This update also coincided with mechanical and software revisions that improved drivability and addressed many of the early issues reported by some owners of initial model years, including complaints related to the CVT, electronics, and windshield durability.

Later models have shown improved owner satisfaction and reliability trends. In recent model years, Subaru streamlined the Ascent lineup by discontinuing the entry-level base trim while keeping it positioned as the flagship SUV in the brand’s portfolio. The Ascent continues in production as Subaru’s three-row option for buyers who want family space without giving up the brand’s adventure-ready character.
