About the Scion xD

The Scion xD, a subcompact hatchback, was introduced by Toyota’s youth-oriented Scion brand in 2008. It replaced the xA model in Scion’s lineup. The xD was based on the Yaris model and assembled in Japan. It featured a 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine that produced 128 horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque. The xD was available with either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission.

The exterior design of the xD was characterized by its boxy shape, wide stance, and short overhangs. It had a distinctive front grille and angular headlights.

Inside, the xD offered a spacious cabin with room for five passengers. It had a 60/40 split-folding rear seat that expanded cargo space when needed. Standard features included air conditioning, power windows and locks, and a Pioneer audio system.

Safety features on the xD included antilock brakes, stability control, and front seat side airbags. The xD received good crash test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. It was named a “Top Safety Pick” in 2008.

The Scion xD competed with other subcompact hatchbacks such as the Honda Fit, Nissan Cube, and Kia Soul. These vehicles offered similar practicality and fuel efficiency.

In 2014, Scion updated the xD with minor exterior changes and a revised interior. However, sales of the xD declined over the years as buyers shifted towards crossover SUVs.

In 2016, Toyota announced that it would discontinue the Scion brand. As a result, the Scion xD was phased out after the 2016 model year. During its eight-year run, the Scion xD provided a practical and affordable option for young buyers seeking a reliable and stylish subcompact hatchback.
