About the Nissan Qashqai

While the Nissan Qashqai has not been sold under that name in the US market, this popular compact crossover has been a bestseller across Europe, Asia, and other global markets for nearly two decades.

Nissan introduced the Qashqai in 2006 as a pioneering entry in the emerging compact crossover segment. The vehicle launched initially in Europe and other international markets, establishing itself as one of the early success stories in what would become the fastest-growing automotive category globally.

The first-generation Qashqai rode on Nissan’s C platform, which it shared with models like the Nissan Sentra and Nissan Rogue (known as the X-Trail in some markets). Engineers positioned it between traditional SUVs and conventional hatchbacks. This approach created a vehicle offering an SUV-like seating position and cargo versatility without the bulk or fuel consumption penalties of larger utility vehicles.

Power came from various four-cylinder engines, including naturally aspirated and turbocharged options ranging from 1.5 to 2.0 liters (in most markets, the Qashqai was offered with smaller displacement engines, including diesels). Front-wheel drive was standard, with all-wheel drive available on select variants. The design emphasized urban usability over off-road capability.

Major competitors during its early years included European versions of the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Ford Kuga (known as the Escape in North America), and later the Mazda CX-5. Each offered different approaches to compact crossover design, but the Qashqai helped establish the template for the segment in Europe and other regions.
