About the Nissan NV200

The Nissan NV200 arrived in North American markets for the 2013 model year as part of Nissan’s global commercial vehicle strategy. This compact van was based on an international platform that had already been successful in Europe, Asia, and other markets since its introduction in 2009. Nissan positioned the NV200 to fill a gap in the small commercial van segment.

Built on a modified version of Nissan’s global compact platform, the NV200 prioritized cargo space and fuel efficiency over performance. The US-market NV200 featured a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 131 horsepower, paired with a continuously variable transmission. This powertrain combination delivered competitive fuel economy for commercial applications.

The NV200’s design emphasized practicality above all else. Sliding side doors provided easy cargo access in tight spaces. The rear featured double doors that opened wide for loading. In the US, the NV200 was primarily offered as a two-seat cargo van, but in other markets, passenger versions seating up to seven people were available.

Primary competitors included the Ford Transit Connect, Ram ProMaster City, and Chevrolet City Express (which was a rebadged NV200). The Mercedes Metris was a larger and more expensive alternative. Each offered different approaches to compact commercial transportation, with varying emphases on cargo capacity, fuel efficiency, and pricing.

Perhaps most notably, a modified version of the NV200 was selected as New York City’s official taxi starting in 2013. This “Taxi of Tomorrow” featured specialized equipment and interior modifications for urban passenger service. The taxi version helped raise the NV200’s profile in American markets.

Production of the NV200 for the United States ended after the 2021 model year as Nissan shifted focus away from small commercial vans in North America. However, the NV200 has continued production in other global markets where compact commercial vans remain popular. The vehicle successfully demonstrated demand for smaller, more efficient commercial vehicles in urban environments.
