The Nissan Leaf launched in December 2010 as the world’s first mass-market, purpose-built electric vehicle, fundamentally changing perceptions about EV viability for everyday consumers. These early EVs collectively demonstrated that battery-powered transportation could be practical for real-world use, not just an environmental statement.

The second generation debuted for the 2018 model year with a complete redesign, improved interior quality, and much longer range options. The standard Leaf offered up to 150 miles of range, while the Leaf Plus variant, introduced in 2019, extended that to 226 miles thanks to a larger 62-kWh battery pack.

Nissan also introduced ProPILOT Assist, a semi-autonomous driving system that combined adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assistance. The more conventional styling and improved performance broadened the Leaf’s appeal, positioning it against newer rivals like the Chevrolet Bolt EV, Hyundai Kona Electric, and Tesla Model 3.

As of 2025, the Leaf remains in its second generation and continues to serve as Nissan’s most affordable electric vehicle, though the company’s EV focus has shifted toward newer models like the Ariya crossover and the upcoming next-generation EVs built on the CMF-EV platform.

The Leaf now competes in a crowded segment that includes the Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV, Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia Niro EV, and Volkswagen ID.3 (in other markets). While newer EVs often offer faster DC charging and longer range, the Leaf maintains advantages in affordability, reliability, and accessibility.
