About the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport
The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport arrived in North American showrooms for the 2011 model year and has been marketed globally under different names, including RVR in Japan and Canada and ASX in Europe and many other regions.
This subcompact crossover represents the third generation of the RVR nameplate, although the earlier RVR models sold from 1991 to 2002 were compact MPVs rather than SUVs. Mitsubishi shifted the RVR toward the crossover segment in 2010, developing the Outlander Sport on the GS platform shared with vehicles such as the Lancer sedan.
Early competitors included models like the Nissan Juke, Kia Soul, and Ford EcoSport, though the subcompact crossover segment has expanded significantly since then. Buyers were offered a choice of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 148 horsepower or a larger 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 168 horsepower, both paired with continuously variable transmissions.
Front-wheel drive was standard, with Mitsubishi’s All-Wheel Control system available as an option, helping differentiate the Outlander Sport from some budget-focused rivals.
From 2012 through 2015, Mitsubishi assembled the Outlander Sport at its Normal, Illinois facility for North American and select export markets before shifting production back to Japan. The model received its first notable update in 2013 with revised front-end styling, followed by another refresh for 2016 that introduced LED daytime running lights on certain trims.
A more comprehensive update arrived for the 2020 model year, bringing Mitsubishi’s Dynamic Shield design language and an updated infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
Today’s Outlander Sport remains mechanically close to its original 2011 design, making it one of the longest-running vehicles currently on sale in the U.S. market. The 2025 model year carries over largely unchanged from 2024, with Rear Seat Alert added as standard equipment across the lineup. Current competitors include the Honda HR-V, Toyota Corolla Cross, Mazda CX-30, Subaru Crosstrek, and Chevrolet Trax.
The Outlander Sport’s appeal centers on affordability and value rather than cutting-edge technology or performance. While all-wheel drive is not standard, Mitsubishi’s available All-Wheel Control system remains a key selling point, along with the brand’s 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Whether this aging platform can remain competitive in an increasingly crowded subcompact crossover segment remains an open question.
