About the Lexus LX
The Lexus LX has served as the brand’s flagship SUV since its launch in 1995 as a 1996 model, with all four generations built on the foundation of the long-running Toyota Land Cruiser.
The first-generation LX 450 launched in 1995 with a 4.5-liter straight-six engine and seating for up to eight, marking Lexus’s entry into the SUV segment. It was essentially a heavily luxuriated Land Cruiser J80, competing against premium SUVs of the era including the Range Rover.
The second-generation LX 470 debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show in late 1997 as a 1998 model, powered by a 4.7-liter V8 and sharing its platform with the Land Cruiser J100. For 2003, Lexus added an available Night View infrared camera system and updated the transmission to a five-speed automatic.
The third generation arrived at the New York International Auto Show in April 2007 as the LX 570, now riding on the J200 Land Cruiser platform with a 5.7-liter V8 producing 383 horsepower. That generation proved to be the longest-running of the LX lineup, lasting through the 2021 model year and receiving multiple significant updates along the way.
During that stretch, its primary rivals included the Cadillac Escalade, Land Rover Range Rover, and Lincoln Navigator.
The fourth and current generation debuted in October 2021 for the 2022 model year, based on the Toyota Land Cruiser J300 platform. It marked a significant powertrain shift, dropping V8 engines entirely in favor of a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 for the LX 600, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
For 2025, Lexus added the LX 700h to the lineup, a hybrid variant pairing the twin-turbo V6 with an electric motor for a combined output of 457 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque. An Ultra Luxury trim removes the third row in favor of a four-seat configuration with rear-seat entertainment and executive-style rear accommodations.

Throughout its production run, the LX has closely mirrored the wheelbase of its Land Cruiser counterpart.
