About the Lexus LS

Development of the Lexus LS began in 1983 as the internal F1 project, a secret effort to build a flagship sedan capable of competing with established European luxury brands. The resulting car followed an intensive multi year development process reportedly costing more than $1 billion, and it premiered with an all new 4.0 liter V8 engine and a long list of luxury features focused on refinement and reliability.

The LS 400 debuted in January 1989 at a base price of about $35,000, undercutting key competitors by thousands of dollars and immediately shaking up the full size luxury segment. Early rivals for LS 400 buyers included the BMW 7 Series, Mercedes Benz S Class, and Jaguar XJ.

The second generation LS 400 arrived for the 1995 model year, followed by the LS 430 for 2001 and the fourth generation LS 460 for 2007 in the US market. The LS 460 was notable for introducing the world’s first production eight speed automatic transmission and an advanced automatic parking assist system.

A long wheelbase LS 460 L and a hybrid LS 600h L variant were also available during the fourth generation. That generation ran through the 2017 model year, continuing to compete against the BMW 7 Series, Mercedes Benz S Class, and Audi A8.

The fifth generation launched as a 2018 model year vehicle and received significant updates for 2021 focused on suspension tuning, ride comfort, and interior materials, along with updates to the infotainment system and driver assistance features. Additional technology and equipment changes followed in subsequent model years.

In the US, this generation moved away from a naturally aspirated V8 to a 3.4 liter twin turbocharged V6 in the LS 500, producing 416 horsepower and 442 lb ft of torque, paired with a 10 speed automatic transmission. Rear wheel drive is standard, with all wheel drive available.

Lexus also continued to offer the LS 500h hybrid in select markets. Traditional rivals in this generation have included the BMW 7 Series, Mercedes Benz S Class, Audi A8, and the Genesis G90.

For the 2026 model year, Lexus announced a limited run Heritage Edition to mark the end of the LS in the US market after a 36 year run. Approximately 250 units are planned, finished in a special black exterior color called Ninety Noir with a Rioja Red interior. Lexus has indicated that the LS will continue to be offered in select markets outside of North America.
