About the Lexus IS

The Lexus IS debuted in 1999 as the brand’s entry into the compact luxury sport sedan segment, originally introduced in Japan as the Toyota Altezza. It launched globally for the 2001 model year as the IS 300 in North America and as the IS 200 and IS 300 in other markets. Early models were powered by inline-six engines, including the 3.0‑liter 2JZ‑GE in the IS 300 producing up to 215 horsepower.

Offered as both a sedan and, in some markets, a sport wagon (Altezza Gita), the first-generation IS targeted the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class with an emphasis on balanced handling and Lexus reliability. The “IS” name stands for “Intelligent Sport,” reflecting Lexus’s intent to blend performance with refinement.

The second-generation IS arrived for the 2006 model year with a more global focus and a wider range of powertrains. New V6 engines powered the IS 250 and IS 350, while diesel variants were offered in Europe. Performance credibility took a major leap in 2008 with the debut of the IS F, which featured a naturally aspirated 5.0‑liter V8 producing 416 horsepower and competed directly with high-performance rivals such as the BMW M3.

Lexus also expanded the lineup with retractable-hardtop convertible versions, the IS 250 C and IS 350 C, introduced in 2009. While praised for build quality and driving dynamics, the IS continued to trail German competitors in overall sales volume.

The third-generation IS debuted for the 2014 model year and has remained in production through multiple updates rather than a full generational change. Initial offerings included the IS 250 and IS 350 V6 models, followed by the introduction of turbocharged four-cylinder variants (the IS 200t, later renamed IS 300) as well as the IS 300h hybrid in select markets outside North America.

A major refresh for the 2021 model year brought sharper styling and chassis revisions, along with the introduction of the IS 500 F Sport Performance. This flagship variant revived the V8 formula, using a naturally aspirated 5.0‑liter engine producing 472 horsepower, making it one of the last V8-powered compact luxury sedans on the market.

Typical competitors include the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4, and Genesis G70.

Lexus has not officially announced a next-generation IS or confirmed an end-of-production date. However, the model continues to play a niche role in the brand’s lineup as a rear-wheel-drive–focused sport sedan in an era increasingly dominated by crossovers and electrification.

Over its lifespan, the IS has sold roughly 1.3 million units across more than 40 global markets, securing its place as a long-running and enthusiast-respected nameplate within Lexus history.
