About the Lexus GX
Lexus introduced the GX in 2002 as the brand’s third SUV, positioned between the car-based RX and the flagship LX. The first-generation GX 470 debuted for the 2003 model year, built on the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado platform and featuring body-on-frame construction with full-time four-wheel drive and a two-speed transfer case.
Power came from a 4.7-liter V8 producing 235 horsepower at launch, later upgraded to 270 horsepower with the addition of VVT-i for the 2005 model year. The GX 470 earned recognition from J.D. Power as the highest-ranked premium luxury SUV in Initial Quality in 2005, and Kelley Blue Book awarded it Best Resale Value honors in the mid-2000s.
Seven-passenger seating was standard, and features such as the available Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System helped distinguish the GX as a luxury SUV with genuine off-road capability rather than a typical crossover.
The second-generation GX 460 arrived for the 2010 model year, replacing the 4.7-liter V8 with a 4.6-liter V8 producing 301 horsepower paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. This generation proved exceptionally long-lived, remaining in production through the 2023 model year, making it the longest-running generation of any Lexus vehicle.
A significant facelift for 2014 introduced the brand’s spindle grille and refreshed interior technology while retaining the same underlying mechanical platform. Even late in its lifecycle, the GX 460 remained popular, reaching a sales peak in 2021 with more than 32,000 units sold in the U.S., reflecting sustained demand for traditional body-on-frame luxury SUVs.
The third-generation GX launched for the 2024 model year with a comprehensive redesign and the new GX 550 designation. The V8 was replaced by a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 producing 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Built on Toyota’s TNGA-F architecture, the new GX emphasizes both off-road performance and on-road refinement. Trim levels range from Premium models to the off-road-focused Overtrail variants and the upscale Luxury and Luxury+ trims. Maximum towing capacity is rated at up to 9,096 pounds when properly equipped.
