About the Lexus ES

The Lexus ES debuted in January 1989 at the Detroit Auto Show as one of two models that introduced Toyota’s new luxury brand to the U.S. market, alongside the flagship LS 400. The first-generation ES 250 played a strategic role by giving Lexus dealers a more accessible sedan to sell in addition to the costly LS.

Built on the Toyota Camry platform, early critics labeled it the “country club Camry,” a perception the model would spend many years distancing itself from. The original ES 250 remained in production only through the 1991 model year, making it a relatively uncommon sight today.

The ES 300 arrived for the 1992 model year as the second generation, increasing engine displacement to 3.0 liters and output to 185 horsepower. Lexus continued to evolve the formula across later generations, with the ES 330 debuting in 2004 when displacement grew to 3.3 liters.

The fifth generation arrived for 2007 as the ES 350, standardizing the name regardless of displacement and introducing a 3.5-liter V6 producing 272 horsepower. The sixth generation launched for 2013, debuting Lexus’s now-signature spindle grille and adding the ES 300h hybrid, which paired a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with electric motor assistance to prioritize efficiency and smoothness.

The current seventh-generation ES was introduced for the 2019 model year on Toyota’s TNGA-K platform, bringing a stiffer structure, more expressive styling, and the introduction of F Sport trims aimed at a sportier appearance and driving feel.

Recent offerings have included the ES 350 with a 3.5-liter V6 producing 302 horsepower and the ES 300h hybrid delivering a combined 215 horsepower and EPA ratings reaching the mid-40 mpg range in combined driving. An ES 250 AWD variant with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder was previously offered but has since been discontinued in the U.S. market.

Assembly for North American ES models takes place primarily at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky, while production for other global markets continues in Japan. Shoppers considering the ES often cross-shop it with sedans such as the Acura TLX, Genesis G80, Cadillac CT5, and BMW 5 Series, depending on size and performance priorities.

Lexus has not yet officially unveiled an eighth-generation ES or confirmed fully electric variants under the ES nameplate. However, the model continues to serve as a core pillar of the brand’s sedan lineup. The ES remains Lexus’s best-selling sedan globally, with cumulative sales exceeding 2.3 million units since its introduction in 1989.
