About the Kia Sportage
Kia launched the original Sportage in 1993 as their first SUV offering, marking the Korean manufacturer’s entry into the growing sport utility vehicle market. This compact SUV was built on a Mazda Bongo-derived platform with body-on-frame construction and offered available four-wheel drive, targeting buyers who wanted off-road capability in a smaller, more affordable package.
The early Sportage helped establish Kia’s presence in American showrooms after the brand entered the U.S. in 1994 as a 1995 model.
The second generation arrived for the 2005 model year in the U.S. (after a brief absence from the market). This completely redesigned version adopted unibody construction, transforming the Sportage from a rugged truck-based vehicle into a more refined crossover SUV.
Improved ride quality and interior comfort made this generation more appealing to mainstream buyers. Kia positioned the redesigned model as a value-oriented alternative in the rapidly expanding compact crossover segment.
