About the Hyundai Genesis Sedan

The Hyundai Genesis sedan launched in 2009 as the Korean automaker’s ambitious entry into the luxury sedan market, representing a significant departure from Hyundai’s mainstream reputation.

Developed on an entirely new rear-wheel-drive platform at a cost of $533 million, the Genesis aimed to deliver BMW 5 Series performance and Mercedes E-Class refinement at a price point thousands below its German competitors. The five-passenger sedan measured 196 inches long and offered buyers a choice between a 290-horsepower 3.8-liter V6 or a 368-horsepower 4.6-liter V8, both paired with six-speed automatic transmissions.

The gamble paid off immediately. The Genesis earned the 2009 North American Car of the Year award (Hyundai’s first such honor) and received widespread acclaim for its high-quality interior materials, refined road manners, and extensive standard equipment.

Buyers cross-shopping the Genesis typically considered the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6, and Lexus GS, though the Genesis undercut these rivals significantly on price while matching them in features. The first generation received a mid-cycle refresh in 2012 that brought updated styling, LED headlights, and an upgraded 333-horsepower 3.8-liter V6.

The second-generation Genesis arrived for 2015 with bolder styling, a longer wheelbase, and all-wheel drive as a new option on V6 models. Power came from a revised 311-horsepower 3.8-liter V6 or an available 420-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 that replaced the previous 4.6-liter unit.

All models received an eight-speed automatic transmission and enhanced technology features including adaptive suspension and a head-up display. The 2016 model year marked the final year for the Hyundai Genesis nameplate, as Hyundai launched Genesis as a standalone luxury brand in 2017.

The sedan was rebranded as the Genesis G80, continuing production under the new luxury division. The original Hyundai Genesis proved the Korean automaker could compete credibly in the premium segment, paving the way for an entire lineup of Genesis luxury vehicles.
