About the Hyundai Genesis Coupe

The Hyundai Genesis Coupe debuted in 2010 as the Korean automaker’s first rear-wheel-drive sports coupe, sharing its platform roots with the Genesis sedan but targeting an entirely different buyer. Where the sedan pursued luxury, the Coupe chased driving excitement with aggressive styling, a long hood, and performance credentials aimed squarely at enthusiasts.

Hyundai positioned the Genesis Coupe as an affordable alternative to the Infiniti G37 Coupe, promising engaging dynamics without the premium badge markup.

Two engine options defined the lineup from launch: a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 210 horsepower and a naturally aspirated 3.8-liter V6 generating 306 horsepower. Both came with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, appealing to purists who valued rowing their own gears.

The Genesis Coupe measured 182 inches long with proportions that emphasized its sporting intentions. Buyers comparing the Genesis Coupe typically looked at the Nissan 370Z, Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, and Mazda RX-8; a mix of Japanese sports cars and American muscle that highlighted the Coupe’s crossover appeal in the performance market.

Hyundai thoroughly refreshed the Genesis Coupe for 2013, addressing criticisms about interior quality while substantially increasing power. The turbocharged four-cylinder jumped to 274 horsepower, while the V6 climbed to 348 horsepower (serious numbers that closed the performance gap with more expensive competitors).

The refresh also brought more aggressive styling with a hexagonal grille, LED lighting elements, and improved cabin materials. An eight-speed automatic replaced the previous six-speed unit, though the six-speed manual remained available for enthusiasts.

Despite positive reviews and a dedicated following, the Genesis Coupe faced declining sales as consumer preferences shifted away from two-door sports cars.

Unlike the Genesis sedan which transitioned to the standalone Genesis luxury brand, the Coupe remained a Hyundai product and was discontinued after the 2016 model year. Production ended without a direct successor, leaving enthusiasts hoping for a future rear-wheel-drive sports coupe from the Genesis brand.
