About the Honda S2000
The Honda S2000 stood as one of the most remarkable sports cars of its era when it debuted in 1999 (as a 2000 model) as a celebration of Honda’s 50th anniversary. Production ran from 1999 to 2009, spanning two main variants: the initial AP1 (1999-2003) and the refined AP2 (2004-2009). Honda developed this rear-wheel-drive roadster with a singular focus on driving excitement.
What made the S2000 extraordinary was its high-revving naturally aspirated engine. The initial 2.0-liter F20C produced 237-247 horsepower (depending on market) and could spin to an astonishing 9,000 RPM redline—achieving the highest specific output of any naturally aspirated production car at that time. Later AP2 models received a slightly larger 2.2-liter F22C engine with more accessible torque.
Every S2000 came paired with a precise six-speed manual transmission and Torsen limited-slip differential. The car featured a perfect 50:50 weight distribution, rigid X-bone frame, and minimalist cockpit centered around the driver. The AP2 brought subtle improvements including revised suspension geometry, more forgiving handling characteristics, and styling updates.
During its production, the S2000 competed against sports cars like the Porsche Boxster, BMW Z4, Mazda MX-5 Miata, and Acura RSX. Honda manufactured all S2000s at its Takanezawa plant in Japan until 2004, then at the Suzuka factory until production ended. The combination of Honda reliability with exotic-car performance created a lasting legacy that makes the S2000 a coveted modern classic today.
