About the Honda Passport
Honda launched the Passport in 1993 as a rebadged Isuzu Rodeo, marking the automaker’s first serious venture into America’s booming SUV market. This body-on-frame SUV competed against the Ford Explorer, Jeep Cherokee, and Nissan Pathfinder, offering a 2.6-liter four-cylinder or a 3.2-liter V6 engine depending on model year.
The partnership made sense for both companies, as Isuzu had excess SUV capacity and Honda lacked a truck-based SUV of its own. Production took place at Subaru-Isuzu Automotive in Lafayette, Indiana.
The second generation arrived for 1998 with refreshed styling and a revised lineup that dropped the four-cylinder engine in favor of a standard 3.2-liter V6 producing 205 horsepower, paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. Sales peaked in the mid-1990s but declined steadily through the early 2000s as the larger, Honda-engineered Pilot entered production.
The Isuzu-based Passport later became known for severe frame corrosion issues, which led to a major recall campaign announced in 2010 covering roughly 150,000 vehicles from the 1998 to 2002 model years. Honda ultimately bought back or scrapped heavily corroded vehicles, and the Passport nameplate disappeared after 2002.
After a 16-year absence, Honda revived the Passport for the 2019 model year as a two-row midsize crossover positioned between the CR-V and Pilot. Built at Honda’s Lincoln, Alabama plant on a unibody platform shared with the Pilot, this third-generation Passport featured a 3.5-liter V6 producing 280 horsepower paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission.
The 2022 model year introduced the TrailSport trim with rugged styling cues and light off-road enhancements, while all-wheel drive became standard across the lineup for 2023. Competitors during this generation included the Nissan Murano, Ford Edge, Toyota Venza, and Chevrolet Blazer, though some of these rivals were later discontinued or repositioned.
The completely redesigned fourth-generation Passport arrived at dealerships in early 2025 as a 2026 model. Developed with a stronger emphasis on off-road capability and durability, it features a 3.5-liter V6 producing approximately 285 horsepower paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and an upgraded i-VTM4 torque-vectoring all-wheel drive system.
