About the Genesis GV80
Genesis launched the GV80 in 2020 (2021 model year) as its first SUV, marking a pivotal moment for Hyundai’s luxury division. The brand had already established credibility with its G70, G80, and G90 sedans but needed an SUV to compete seriously in the American luxury market where crossovers dominate sales.
The GV80 arrived with bold styling featuring Genesis’s signature crest grille and quad LED headlights. Buyers considering the GV80 at launch typically also looked at the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Audi Q7, and Lexus RX.
Genesis offered the GV80 with a choice of two turbocharged engines: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder producing 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque, or a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 generating 375 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque. Both paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and available all-wheel drive.
The SUV seats up to seven passengers across three rows, though most buyers opt for the available second-row captain’s chairs that reduce capacity to six. Interior materials and craftsmanship rival German competitors while undercutting them significantly on price.
The GV80 gained widespread attention in early 2021 when golfer Tiger Woods survived a serious accident while driving one during the Genesis Invitational. The SUV’s structural integrity and safety systems were widely praised following the incident.
Genesis has updated the GV80 annually with technology and feature enhancements. For the 2025 model year, the GV80 received a significant mid-cycle refresh featuring an updated exterior design, a redesigned interior with a 27-inch panoramic OLED display, and the introduction of the new GV80 Coupe variant, which offers a sportier fastback-style roofline. Mild hybrid technology is now available on select four-cylinder models to improve efficiency.
Today, the GV80 continues as Genesis’s flagship SUV, competing against established luxury brands with extensive dealer networks. Genesis addresses this disadvantage through complimentary maintenance, a valet service that picks up and returns vehicles for service appointments, and a growing standalone dealership presence in major markets.
The GV80 has helped Genesis surpass 100,000 cumulative U.S. sales within five years of launch, firmly establishing the Korean luxury brand as a serious contender among European and Japanese rivals.
