About the Genesis G70

Genesis launched the G70 in 2017 (for the 2018 model year in Korea and 2019 in North America) as the compact luxury sedan flagship for Hyundai’s newly established luxury division.

This model marked Genesis’s entry into the highly competitive entry-luxury segment, directly challenging established European and domestic competitors. The G70 represented the brand’s commitment to performance-oriented luxury vehicles.

Built on a rear-wheel-drive platform related to, but not identical to, the Kia Stinger, the G70 prioritized driving dynamics over pure comfort. Engineers developed the chassis specifically for sporting applications.

At launch, two engine options were available: a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 252 horsepower and a twin-turbocharged 3.3-liter V6 generating 365 horsepower. Both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations were offered.

For the 2024 model year, the G70 dropped the 2.0-liter engine in favor of a more powerful 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 300 horsepower, while the 3.3-liter V6 remained available for a time before being discontinued in some markets for 2025.

The G70’s development focused on delivering genuine sports sedan characteristics while maintaining luxury refinement. Suspension tuning emphasized precise handling and road feel. Interior appointments featured premium materials and advanced technology systems. The design language reflected Genesis’s emerging aesthetic identity.

Primary competitors included the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4, and Cadillac ATS. Each offered different approaches to compact luxury performance, but the G70 distinguished itself through aggressive pricing and generous feature content.

A significant refresh arrived for the 2022 model year, bringing updated styling and enhanced technology features. The changes addressed early criticism while maintaining the original’s sporting character. Interior quality improvements elevated the cabin experience, and a larger, more modern infotainment screen was introduced. Advanced driver assistance systems became standard across the lineup.

The G70 has received numerous automotive awards and critical acclaim for its driving dynamics and value proposition. Motor Trend named it Car of the Year in 2019. The model successfully established Genesis’s credibility in the performance luxury segment.

Production continues as Genesis expands its global presence and model lineup, with the G70 serving as an important foundation for the brand’s sporting credentials.
