About the Ford Edge

The Ford Edge first entered the American automotive market in 2006 (as a 2007 model), representing Ford’s vision for a midsize crossover SUV that combined the comfort and driving dynamics of a sedan with the utility of an SUV.

Designed to appeal to a broad audience, the Edge was positioned between the smaller Escape and the larger Explorer in Ford’s lineup. Its introduction was a strategic move by Ford to capitalize on the growing demand for crossovers in the United States.

By the time the second generation rolled out in 2015, the Edge had established itself as a versatile family vehicle, known for its roomy interior and powerful 4 and 6-cylinder engine options.

The Edge was built on the Ford CD4 platform, which it shared with the Fusion sedan, allowing for a comfortable ride and responsive handling. It was also among the first to offer Ford’s EcoBoost engines, which promised increased fuel efficiency without sacrificing performance.

The Edge’s design evolution reflected Ford’s shift towards a more modern and global design language. With its bold grille, sleek lines, and improved aerodynamics, the Edge’s exterior design conveyed a sense of sophistication and strength. Inside, Ford emphasized technology and comfort, with features like the SYNC infotainment system and a spacious, well-appointed cabin.

Throughout its production, the Edge has been periodically refreshed to keep it competitive. The 2019 model year, for example, introduced a performance-oriented Edge ST variant, which boasted a 335-horsepower twin-turbo V6 engine, sport-tuned suspension, and distinctive styling cues.

As a midsize crossover, the Ford Edge faced competition from a variety of similar vehicles. Notable among these were the Chevrolet Equinox, Nissan Murano, and Hyundai Santa Fe. Each competitor offered its own mix of features, styling, and value, but the Edge distinguished itself with a well-rounded package that balanced performance, technology, and spaciousness.
