About the Ford Edge
Ford introduced the Edge in 2006 for the 2007 model year, positioning it between the compact Escape and larger Explorer in Ford’s SUV lineup. The Edge represented Ford’s shift toward car-based crossovers during an era when body-on-frame SUVs still dominated.
Built on the same platform as the Fusion sedan, the Edge delivered better fuel economy and car-like handling while maintaining the higher seating position and cargo space buyers wanted. Early competitors included the Nissan Murano, Honda Pilot, and Mazda CX-9.
The first generation ran from 2007 through 2014, establishing the Edge as a popular family hauler. Sales consistently exceeded 100,000 units annually, proving Ford had identified a sweet spot in the market. The Edge offered V6 power, available all-wheel drive, and a well-appointed interior that felt more upscale than its price suggested.
Ford launched the second generation in 2015 with sharper styling, improved technology, and a new platform shared with the Fusion and Lincoln MKX (later renamed Nautilus). This generation remained in production through the 2024 model year, making it one of the longest-running platforms in Ford’s recent history. Rivals included the Chevrolet Blazer, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Honda Passport (all targeting families seeking midsize crossover versatility).
The Edge lineup offered two engine choices in its later years. A 2.0-liter turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder produced 250 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, serving most buyers well. The performance-oriented Edge ST featured a 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6 generating 335 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque, giving the family crossover genuine performance credentials.
An eight-speed automatic transmission handled shifting duties across all trims. Front-wheel drive came standard, with intelligent all-wheel drive available.
Interior space accommodated five passengers comfortably. Cargo capacity reached 39.2 cubic feet behind the second row, expanding to 73.4 cubic feet with seats folded.
Ford equipped recent Edge models with SYNC 4A infotainment, a 12-inch touchscreen, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Available features included adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free driving system on select trims.
Ford officially discontinued the Edge after the 2024 model year, ending an 18-year production run as the company shifts focus toward electric vehicles and truck-based SUVs. Production at Ford’s Oakville Assembly Complex in Ontario, Canada, is being retooled to build next-generation electric vehicles starting in 2025.
No direct replacement for the Edge has been announced in North America, although a new-generation Edge L continues to be produced and sold in China.
