About the Ford EcoSport

The Ford EcoSport made its U.S. debut in 2018, though the subcompact SUV had already proven itself globally since 2003. As Ford’s smallest SUV offering, the EcoSport aimed to capture urban drivers who wanted the commanding view and versatility of an SUV in a city-friendly package.

Built in Chennai, India, the U.S. version of the EcoSport featured distinctive styling updates and reinforced structure to meet American safety standards. Two engine options powered the vehicle: a 1.0L turbocharged three-cylinder EcoBoost and a naturally aspirated 2.0L four-cylinder. The side-hinged rear door, a unique feature in its class, paid homage to Ford’s SUV heritage.

Ford developed the EcoSport to battle in the rapidly growing subcompact SUV segment against rivals like the Chevrolet Trax, Honda HR-V, and Hyundai Kona. The vehicle offered tech-savvy features including an available 8-inch touchscreen with SYNC 3, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto compatibility. Standard FordPass Connect provided remote vehicle access and monitoring through smartphone integration.

Though smaller than its Escape sibling, the EcoSport boasted surprising cargo space with its tiered load floor and 60/40 split rear seats. The elevated seating position and compact dimensions made it particularly appealing for city dwellers. Ford discontinued the EcoSport in the U.S. market after the 2022 model year, making way for the more modern Bronco Sport in its lineup.

Despite its relatively short run in North America, the EcoSport demonstrated Ford’s ability to adapt global platforms for American consumers. The model’s compact size, available all-wheel drive, and urban maneuverability filled a specific niche in Ford’s SUV range, even as changing consumer preferences and rising expectations for refinement ultimately led to its departure.
