About the Ford E-450
The Ford E-450 represents the heaviest-duty variant in the long-running E-Series lineup, designed specifically as a cutaway chassis for commercial upfitting. Unlike the E-150, E-250, and E-350 cargo and passenger vans, the E-450 was never sold as a complete vehicle.
Instead, Ford delivered a bare chassis with cab to specialty manufacturers who added custom bodies such as box trucks, shuttle buses, Class C motorhomes, ambulances, and other commercial applications. This approach allowed businesses to build exactly what they needed on a proven and adaptable platform.
Ford introduced the E-450 Super Duty designation in 1999, distinguishing it from lighter-duty E-Series models. The E-450 filled a niche between standard one-ton vans and medium-duty trucks, offering serious capability without requiring a commercial driver’s license for most configurations. Primary competitors include the Chevrolet Express 4500 and Ram 4500/5500 chassis cabs, all targeting similar commercial and recreational applications.
Ford discontinued E-Series cargo and passenger vans after the 2014 model year when the Transit replaced them in those roles. However, the E-450 cutaway and stripped chassis models have remained in continuous production through the 2025 model year.
