About the Ford C-Max

The Ford C-Max brought European-style compact MPV practicality to American driveways when it launched in the United States for the 2013 model year. Unlike its European counterpart that offered traditional gasoline engines, the US-spec C-Max came exclusively as a hybrid or plug-in hybrid model, positioning Ford squarely in the growing fuel-efficient family vehicle segment.

Built on the same global C platform as the third-generation Ford Focus, the C-Max featured a taller roofline and flexible seating that appealed to buyers wanting more space than a traditional hatchback without committing to a full-size SUV.

Ford offered two distinct variants throughout the C-Max’s American run. The C-Max Hybrid paired a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor for an EPA-estimated 42 mpg combined, while the C-Max Energi added a larger battery pack enabling 20 miles of all-electric range.

Buyers cross-shopping the C-Max typically considered the Toyota Prius V for its proven hybrid reliability, the Chevrolet Volt for its extended electric range, or the Nissan Leaf for those ready to go fully electric. Some shoppers also looked at the Kia Soul EV as an alternative eco-friendly compact.

The C-Max received a refresh for the 2017 model year that updated the front fascia with a more prominent grille and revised headlights, along with enhanced technology features including available SYNC 3 infotainment.

Despite these improvements, changing consumer preferences toward traditional SUVs and crossovers impacted sales. Ford discontinued the C-Max in North America after the 2018 model year as the automaker shifted focus toward trucks, SUVs, and crossovers that better aligned with market demand.

The C-Max continues in production for other global markets, but American buyers looking for Ford’s hybrid technology now turn to options like the Escape Hybrid or Maverick.
