About the Ford Bronco Sport

Ford unveiled the Bronco Sport for the 2021 model year as a compact crossover bearing the legendary Bronco name but sharing little with its body-on-frame sibling. Built on Ford’s C2 platform (the same architecture underlying the Escape and Maverick) the Bronco Sport targets buyers who want rugged styling and light off-road capability without the size, weight, or fuel consumption of the full-size Bronco.

The strategy aimed at capturing buyers considering the Jeep Compass, Subaru Crosstrek, and Mazda CX-50.

The Bronco Sport launched as Ford’s answer to the growing adventure crossover segment. These vehicles blend crossover practicality with outdoor-oriented features like increased ground clearance, standard all-wheel drive, and trail-ready trim levels. Unlike hardcore off-roaders, they remain comfortable for daily commuting while offering weekend adventure capability.

First-generation Bronco Sport models (2021-present) come with two turbocharged engine options. The base 1.5-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder generates 181 horsepower and 190 lb-ft of torque. The 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder, standard on the Badlands and Heritage Limited trims, produces 250 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

All-wheel drive is standard across the lineup, with the Badlands and Heritage Limited trims featuring a twin-clutch rear-drive unit that can actively send torque side-to-side for improved traction. There is no diesel or hybrid powertrain available as of 2025.

Ford differentiated the Bronco Sport through genuine off-road hardware. The G.O.A.T. (Goes Over Any Type of Terrain) modes adjust throttle response, transmission shift points, and traction control for different surfaces.

Badlands and Heritage Limited models add a twin-clutch rear differential lock, metal skid plates, and increased ground clearance of up to 8.8 inches. The terrain management system includes settings for sand, mud/ruts, and rock crawl (features competitors often reserve for pricier models).

Interior design emphasizes utility over luxury. Rubberized flooring with integrated drains appears on Badlands and Heritage Limited trims, acknowledging that dirt and water are part of the lifestyle. An 8-inch touchscreen running Ford’s SYNC 3 infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard.

Cargo space measures 65.2 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. For 2025, Ford has added minor interior material updates and optional advanced driver-assist features, but the Bronco Sport continues largely unchanged mechanically.

The Bronco Sport carved out a niche by delivering more off-road credibility than typical compact crossovers while remaining manageable for everyday use.
