About the Dodge Ram 2500

The Ram 2500 emerged as part of Chrysler’s heavy-duty truck strategy for the 1994 model year, debuting alongside its lighter-duty sibling, the Ram 1500. This three-quarter-ton pickup targeted commercial buyers and serious recreational towers who needed more capability than half-ton trucks could provide.

Engineers developed the platform with heavy-duty frames, suspension components, and drivetrains designed for demanding applications that smaller trucks couldn’t handle as reliably.

Early models offered a range of gas V8 engines as well as the now-legendary 5.9-liter Cummins turbo diesel inline-six, which quickly became a defining characteristic. The Cummins engine delivered exceptional torque for towing and hauling, while gas options appealed to buyers prioritizing lower initial costs.

Competition came primarily from Ford’s F-250 (part of the F-Series lineup, with the dedicated Super Duty line arriving in 1999) and from Chevrolet and GMC’s heavy-duty models, which were rebranded as Silverado 2500HD and Sierra 2500HD starting in 2001. Each manufacturer emphasized different strengths in marketing their heavy-duty offerings, from payload to towing technology.

The second generation arrived for the 2003 model year with updated styling that matched the light-duty Ram 1500. Chrysler improved interior comfort, expanded cab configurations, and increased payload and towing ratings substantially over the first generation.

Major updates came with the third generation in 2010. The 6.7-liter Cummins turbo diesel (introduced in 2007) fully replaced the long-serving 5.9-liter unit. Power output and torque increased significantly while meeting stricter emissions standards.

New transmission options, including a stronger six-speed automatic, handled the increased torque more effectively. These changes helped the Ram 2500 remain competitive against evolving rivals.

The current fifth generation launched for the 2019 model year with extensive refinements to ride quality, interior appointments, and available technology. Advanced driver-assistance systems became available for the first time, along with improved infotainment and connectivity features.

Despite these comfort and tech upgrades, the Ram 2500 remains focused on maximum capability. When properly equipped, towing ratings now exceed 20,000 pounds, making it a serious competitor for the heaviest recreational and commercial applications.
