About the Chevrolet Trax

Chevrolet introduced the Trax for the 2013 model year in Canada and international markets, marking the brand’s entry into the emerging subcompact crossover segment. Developed by GM Korea and built on the Gamma II platform shared with the Buick Encore and Chevrolet Sonic, the first-generation Trax arrived as an affordable entry point to SUV ownership.

The model reached U.S. dealerships for 2015 after strong initial sales in Canada convinced GM to expand distribution. Early competitors included the Nissan Juke, Mitsubishi RVR, and MINI Cooper Countryman.

The first generation received a significant mid-cycle refresh for 2017. Chevrolet updated the exterior with design cues from the Malibu and Volt, including new LED daytime running lights, dual taillights, and a revised grille. The interior gained a redesigned dashboard and center instrument panel that improved perceived quality.

Power came from a 1.4L turbocharged four-cylinder producing 138 horsepower, with front-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive optional. By this point, the segment had exploded with new entries including the Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3, and Jeep Renegade joining the fray.

Production of the first-generation Trax ended after the 2022 model year, with no 2023 model offered as Chevrolet prepared a complete redesign. The second generation debuted for 2024 as a dramatically different vehicle (11 inches longer, two inches wider, and four inches lower than its predecessor).

Styled to match Chevrolet’s contemporary design language with slim LED running lights and a bold grille, the new Trax offered significantly more interior space including class-leading cargo capacity of 54.1 cubic feet with rear seats folded.

The redesigned Trax received widespread acclaim, earning Cars.com’s coveted Best Car of 2024 award. Power comes from a smaller but more efficient turbocharged 1.2L three-cylinder engine producing 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Unlike its predecessor and most competitors, the second-generation Trax offers only front-wheel drive, with Chevrolet directing buyers wanting all-wheel drive to the Trailblazer. Starting under $21,000, the Trax competes against the Honda HR-V, Nissan Kicks, Kia Seltos, and corporate sibling Buick Encore with an emphasis on value, technology, and practicality. Production continues at GM’s Changwon plant in South Korea.
