About the Chevrolet Camaro

The Chevrolet Camaro debuted in 1966 for the 1967 model year as General Motors’ answer to the wildly popular Ford Mustang, igniting one of the most legendary rivalries in automotive history. Designed as an affordable, stylish pony car with serious performance potential, the first-generation Camaro quickly became a symbol of American muscle.

Through the decades, the Camaro has evolved through six distinct generations, each reflecting the automotive trends and performance technologies of its era while maintaining that unmistakable aggressive stance and V8 rumble that enthusiasts crave.

The fifth generation, launched for the 2010 model year, marked a triumphant return after an eight-year hiatus. Built on the Zeta platform developed by GM’s Australian subsidiary Holden, it brought modern styling that paid homage to the classic 1969 model while incorporating contemporary performance engineering.

This generation competed directly against the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger, and to a lesser extent, sport coupes like the Hyundai Genesis Coupe and Nissan 370Z.

The sixth and final generation arrived for the 2016 model year with a completely redesigned platform using GM’s Alpha architecture, shared with the Cadillac ATS and CTS. This generation is lighter, more rigid, and more technologically advanced than any Camaro before it.

It offered multiple powertrain options, from the turbocharged four-cylinder to the supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 V8 in the ZL1 variant producing 650 horsepower. The sixth-generation Camaro has faced competition from the Ford Mustang, Dodge Challenger, Toyota Supra, and Nissan Z.

Chevrolet confirmed that 2024 would be the final model year for this generation, with production officially ending in December 2023 at the Lansing Grand River Assembly plant. Although Chevrolet has hinted that the Camaro nameplate may return in the future, potentially in an electric performance form, no official successor has been announced as of 2025.
