About the Buick Enclave

Buick launched the Enclave in 2007 as a 2008 model, marking the brand’s ambitious entry into the growing three-row crossover market. Built on General Motors’ Lambda platform alongside the GMC Acadia, Chevrolet Traverse, and the now-discontinued Saturn Outlook, the first-generation Enclave represented Buick’s attempt to attract younger families while maintaining the brand’s reputation for comfort and refinement.

The original Enclave competed against established players like the Acura MDX, Lexus RX 350 (and later GX 460), and Volvo XC90. Its swooping roofline and distinctive Buick portholes helped differentiate it from more conservative competitors. The Lambda platform provided a smooth, car-like driving experience that appealed to buyers transitioning from sedans to SUVs.

Buick refreshed the first generation in 2013 with updated styling, a new grille, LED daytime running lights, and an upgraded interior. The Enclave gained popularity for its quiet cabin, comfortable seating, and competitive pricing compared to German luxury alternatives. However, some criticized its fuel economy and handling dynamics compared to more athletic competitors.

The second generation debuted for the 2018 model year with dramatically updated styling and improved technology. This version rides on GM’s C1XX platform, which reduces weight while improving structural rigidity. The new Enclave features a bold front grille design, standard LED lighting, and a more upscale interior with available leather-appointed seating and premium materials.

Modern technology includes a standard 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging, and available features like adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and a surround-view camera. The Enclave is currently offered in trims including Essence, Premium, and Avenir, with seating for up to seven passengers.

Today’s primary competitors include the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Mazda CX-90, Hyundai Palisade, Kia Telluride, and Volkswagen Atlas. The contemporary Enclave positions itself as an accessible luxury option in the competitive three-row crossover segment, balancing premium comfort with family-friendly practicality.
