About the Buick Century

The Buick Century nameplate carries one of the longest production runs in American automotive history, first appearing in 1936. Through multiple discontinuous runs spanning much of the 20th century, the Century evolved from a performance-oriented Buick in the prewar era to a mid-size family sedan by the 1980s.

The front-wheel-drive era began with the generation that launched for the 1982 model year, when the Century moved to GM’s A-body platform and became a value-focused, comfort-oriented sedan positioned below the Buick Regal.

The final generation ran from 1997 through 2005, sharing GM’s W-body platform with the Buick Regal and Oldsmobile Intrigue and emphasizing practicality over sportiness. Measuring just under 195 inches in length, the Century offered generous interior space for five passengers and a large trunk, appealing to buyers who prioritized comfort, affordability, and ease of ownership.

Power was provided by a 3.1-liter V6 engine, which produced between 160 and 175 horsepower depending on model year and tuning, paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. Buyers considering the Century often cross-shopped it against mainstream family sedans such as the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Ford Taurus, and Chevrolet Impala.

Sales remained relatively strong into the early 2000s, peaking in the early part of the decade before declining as consumer demand shifted toward SUVs and crossovers. By the time production ended after the 2005 model year, annual sales had fallen significantly, leading Buick to discontinue the Century in the United States.

While Buick later revived the Century name for a luxury MPV sold exclusively in China, the Century sedan remains absent from the American market, where it is remembered as a comfortable, dependable family car that served buyers reliably for many years.
