About the BMW X3

The BMW X3 made its debut in 2003 for the 2004 model year as BMW’s entry into the growing compact luxury SUV segment. Built on a platform derived from the BMW 3 Series (the E46 at the time), the original X3 aimed to deliver BMW’s signature driving dynamics in a more practical, elevated package.

Early competitors included the Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class, and Volvo XC60, all vying for buyers who wanted luxury SUV versatility without sacrificing performance.

The first generation (2003-2010, chassis code E83) established the X3 as one of the first compact premium SUVs, offering xDrive all-wheel drive and strong on-road agility, though its ride quality drew mixed reviews. BMW refined the formula with the second generation (2011-2017, chassis code F25), which featured improved interior space, better fuel economy, and enhanced technology features.

The third generation (G01) launched in 2017 for the 2018 model year and brought significant improvements across all areas. This generation features a more spacious cabin, advanced driver assistance systems, and updated infotainment technology.

The exterior adopted a more aggressive design language while maintaining the X3’s distinctive proportions. Engine options include efficient four-cylinder turbo units, a potent inline-six in the M40i variant, and a plug-in hybrid (xDrive30e) in certain markets.

For the 2025 model year, BMW introduced the all-new fourth-generation X3 (chassis code G45). This redesign brings sharper exterior styling with slimmer headlights, a larger kidney grille, and a more coupe-like silhouette. Inside, the cabin adopts BMW’s latest curved display with iDrive 9, a simplified control layout, and upgraded materials.

Powertrains now include the X3 30 xDrive with a turbocharged four-cylinder mild hybrid system, and the X3 M50 xDrive with a 3.0-liter inline-six mild hybrid delivering over 390 horsepower. A plug-in hybrid version is also planned for global markets.

Today’s X3 competes primarily against the Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Genesis GV70, and Lexus NX. The iX3 electric variant continues to be offered in Europe and other global markets but currently remains unavailable in the United States.
