About the BMW i4

The BMW i4 went on sale in late 2021 as a 2022 model year vehicle, making it one of the early models released under BMW’s modern “i” electric sub-brand.

Rather than developing an entirely separate platform, BMW took a practical approach: the i4 shares its CLAR-based architecture with the 4 Series Gran Coupe, a decision that reduced development complexity while maintaining the performance, range, and refinement expected from a premium electric sedan.

The i4’s powertrain (including the electric motor, charging unit, and high-voltage battery) was developed in-house by BMW as part of its fifth-generation eDrive system. The electric motor, single-speed transmission, and power electronics are housed in a single integrated unit to improve packaging and efficiency. BMW states that the motor design avoids the use of rare earth materials, and the battery chemistry reduces cobalt content compared with earlier generations.

At launch in the US, the lineup consisted of the rear-wheel-drive eDrive40 and the dual-motor M50 xDrive, the latter capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in around 3.7 seconds. Primary competition included the Tesla Model 3, Polestar 2, and performance-oriented variants of the Tesla Model Y, as well as similarly sized premium EV sedans.

A Life Cycle Impulse update arrived in 2024 alongside the refreshed combustion-engined 4 Series. An entry-level eDrive35 had been introduced earlier in select markets and expanded availability around the time of the update, and an xDrive40 all-wheel-drive variant joined the lineup in certain regions, positioned between the eDrive40 and the M50 xDrive.

The refreshed i4 brought revised lighting signatures front and rear, updated grille detailing, and new wheel designs. Inside, BMW introduced updated trim options, a revised steering wheel design, and BMW Operating System 8.5 with iDrive QuickSelect for a more intuitive interface. All i4 variants are produced at BMW Group Plant Munich in Germany.
