About the BMW 5 Series

The BMW 5 Series holds a distinction few other models in the lineup can claim: it is BMW’s oldest nameplate still in continuous production and the first BMW model line to use “Series” in its name, establishing the three-digit naming convention the brand still follows today. The first generation arrived in 1972, and cumulative production has surpassed ten million units worldwide.

The early generations built the 5 Series’ reputation as a driver’s executive sedan. The E28, produced from 1981 to 1988, introduced the first M5 performance model and expanded the availability of anti-lock brakes within the lineup. The E34 that followed added the Touring wagon body style, all-wheel drive, and V8 engine options.

The fifth-generation E60, produced from 2003 to 2010, was one of the most talked-about iterations, as its Chris Bangle-era styling divided opinion sharply at the time. It also expanded the use of iDrive, introduced available head-up display and active cruise control, and marked the return of turbocharged petrol power to the 5 Series range in modern form.

Throughout these generations, the primary competitors were the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6, and Lexus GS.

The seventh-generation G30, unveiled in late 2016 and on sale from 2017, was built on BMW’s CLAR architecture shared with the 7 Series and other large rear-wheel-drive-based models. It received a Life Cycle Impulse refresh in 2020 with slimmer LED headlights, a larger kidney grille, and updated infotainment before being phased out in most markets by 2023.

The eighth-generation G60 was revealed in May 2023 and began production later that year, with US deliveries starting in late 2023. Built on an updated version of the CLAR platform shared with the latest 7 Series, it is slightly larger than its predecessor. The redesigned interior significantly reduced physical controls, centering the experience around BMW Curved Display running Operating System 8.5 with iDrive QuickSelect.

Alongside conventional gasoline and plug-in hybrid models, BMW introduced the i5 as a fully electric version offered in eDrive40 and M60 xDrive trims (with xDrive40 available in select markets). The 550e xDrive plug-in hybrid joined the US lineup as part of the new generation, reintroducing a plug-in hybrid 5 Series for American buyers.

Today’s competition comes primarily from the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6, and Genesis G80.
